Kilimanjaro Hiking Machame Route 07 Days

Altitude gain: 5,380 to 9,350’; Hiking time: 5-7 hours, 7 miles
Start your journey by driving from Arusha to Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park making a stop, at Machame to meet your climb crew. As you begin your ascent through the Kilimanjaros rainforest you will be surrounded by greenery, decorated with moss, lichen, and beautiful flowers that blossom all year round. Keep an eye out for bird species and playful monkeys along the way. At the end of the day settle in at Machame Camp, nestled amidst plants.

9,350 ft to 12,500 ft, 3 miles, approx. 4-6 hours
Travel from the rainforest. Ascend a ridge to reach heather covered moorland. This terrain is sparsely populated with helichrysum and lobelia plants. Take in the features, including lava tubes and glacial valleys. As you continue you’ll arrive at the Shira Plateau, where you can admire the Western Breach glaciers. Spend the night at Shira Camp enjoying views of the snow capped peaks of Mount Kibo.

12,500 ft to 15,223 ft (Lava Tower), down to 13,044 ft, 7km, 6-8 hours
Today make your way up, to the desert of the alpine region, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the glaciers. If you’re up for it you can also consider climbing the Lava Tower before descending through the Barranco Valley, known as the ‘Garden of the Senecios. This day can be quite challenging. Its essential, for acclimatization purposes. Spend the night at Barranco Camp.

13,044 ft to 13,123 ft, 3 miles, 4-5 hours
Once you successfully ascend the Barranco Wall utilize all your limbs to reach the summit of Karanga Valley. Follow a trail that includes slopes until you arrive at Karanga Camp, which is selected for its ideal altitude acclimatization. Take delight in awe inspiring sunsets that offer views of valleys. Spend the night at Karanga Camp for an experience.

13,123 ft to 15,288 ft, 2 miles, 4-5 hours
Today we will continue our journey, to Barafu Camp, which will take half a day. We will have lunch at the camp. Enjoy some relaxation time before we make our summit attempt. The camp is situated in a barren alpine desert. Can sometimes experience winds. However in the evenings we are treated to views of Mawenzi Peak. We will have a dinner. Then rest for the night, at Barafu Camp.

Summit Ascent, Mweka Camp
15,288 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,467 ft, 3 miles ascent, 7 miles descent, 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
Embark, on your summit attempt before midnight enduring the freezing temperatures and strong winds that characterize this phase of the journey. As daybreak approaches arrive at Stella Point (18,652ft). Be captivated by the awe inspiring sight of a sunrise painting the sky above Mawenzi Peak. Following an ascent rejoice at Uhuru Peak. Then make your way down through the lush rainforest, towards Mweka Camp. With each step you’ll feel a sense of rejuvenation. Spend the night at Mweka Camp to rest and recharge.

12,467 ft to 5,380 ft, 6 miles, 3-4 hours
After having breakfast make your way through the forest, on the mountain. When its around midday say goodbye to your crew. Return to your hotel. Treat yourself to a shower. Indulge, in a celebratory dinner!
