5 Days Rwenzori Hike Uganda Safari
OVERVIEW
The trail has only been open for wilderness camping. The hike takes you through the mountain forest, where you can see wildlife such as black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, chameleons, and the Rwenzori Turaco. The shortest trek is three days. A one-day extension, including John Matte Hut, can be arranged.
detail itinerary
On this day, you will be picked up and driven to Fort Portal, in the Rwenzori foothills. As we prepare for a trek, you will have the opportunity to visit crater lakes and hike.
Day 2: Departure from Ibanda Omu’ka Kizza Rest Area (2,977 m)
After breakfast at your hotel or campsite in Ibanda or Nyakalenjija, the trek begins through the pristine rainforest of the Kyambogho ridge, with a view of the Mubuku Valley. Then climb the heavily forested ridge, which is home to many primates, including black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and the rare L’hoest’s monkey. At 2,977 meters, the Omu’ka Kizza Rest Camp offers spectacular views of the Rwenzori foothills and Kasese town, which is 2,160 meters below. You may hear chimps and see black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, and the brilliantly colored Rwenzori turaco during this part of the trip. The camp is a wilderness camping area.

Mahoma Lake You will hike to Mahoma Lake after breakfast in the early morning. Through an incredibly beautiful forest of giant heather covered in layers of bright green moss, the forest will lead you to a long narrow moss-covered ridge up to 3,515 meters. You will follow the footprints of mountain elephants through the bamboo and heather forest, and you may be able to see them drinking from the hot spring. The ridge leads to the Rukenga valley, where you can see the everlasting flowers (mimulopsis eliotti) and the giant lobelia. You then make your way to Mahoma Lake Camp for the night. If the sky is clear that day, Mt. Baker, Mt. Stanley, and the Portal Peaks may be visible.
After breakfast, you can take a walk around the lake before descending through Nyaibitaba ranger post and the Mpanga ridge to the Mubuku valley, which is home to the three-horned chameleon and will lead you back to Ibanda.
Relax at Kazinga Channel, a natural link that connects Lakes Edward and George in an eternal handshake. After this brief respite, proceed to the airport or your next destination.
